There are two forces that have combined in order to introduce a new era for poster design. For years, people have experienced different poster designs, the only downside is that these posters are inanimate and do not have life. With the advance of technology, digital posters are now being utilized. Today, you can see them almost everywhere from train stations, to bus stops to airports. The question: what is the next challenge? Social media platforms are also now utilizing video content and animated pictures rather than sticking to regular, plain images. Rather than speculating that this is the end of the poster era and the start of a new one, designers and animators are now teaming up together to bring a new challenge to the world of graphics with their new form of communication. Learn about moving posters, a new poster movement.
The Weltformat Poster Festival is an exhibition that celebrate moving posters. This year, they showed the start of a new global conversation and really elaborated what a moving poster is, and how people such as marketers and designers can benefit from this new trend. The moving poster is a brainchild of Felix Pfaellie, who is an acclaimed Swiss designer. At the time of creation, there were not enough ideas and examples to warrant such an exhibition.

Fast forward a few years later and Josh Schaub, also a designer, decided to continue the idea. He worked with Erich Brechbuhl in order to bring their designers to diverse locations such as Finland and South Korea all the way to the Swiss festival. Around the world, it seems like the moving poster movement is in full swing.

To start researching the exhibition, Schaub searched around the internet for different moving posters and collected a huge database in order to start his work. For the exhibition to be logical, he had to narrow down and just set two initial criterias: the posters need to fit a standard portrait format and it needs to have a single idea to communicate. He then looked for posters that used different types of animation so that they can enhance their message, after all the main purpose of a poster is to gain attention right? As Brechbuhl would say: A poster is a poster but the animation acts like a fifth color or a special type of printing.
